Scientology volunteer ministers: facing others’ pains & sufferings – and doing something about it! – by Patrick Valtin

“I want to express to you my appreciation for all that your Church has done in these difficult times, and would ask that you pass my thanks to your Volunteer Ministers.
“As one who saw firsthand what was needed at the World Trade Center site in the days and weeks immediately after September 11th, I want to thank you, the Church of Scientology, and the Volunteer Ministers of the Church of Scientology, many of whom came long distances to help us.
“The Volunteer Ministers worked with great energy and great compassion at Ground Zero, helping to ease the physical burdens, and mental strains of the rescue workers. From the earliest days of this tragedy, until the time when volunteers were no longer needed at the site, the people of your Church were there in force.
“The organization, the caring, and the dedication of your Volunteer Ministers were exceptional, very much appreciated, and will long be remembered by those who received their help. I cannot thank the Volunteers enough.”
Joseph J. Esposito,
Chief of Department
New York City Police Department,
December 14, 2001
Through the last 20 years, Scientology Volunteer Ministers have provided emergency service at 126 worst-case disaster sites. Today, they are among the most recognized independent relief organizations in the free world.
Scientology Volunteer ministers have been seen all over the world, just in the last 12 months. Helping earthquake victims in Brazil, Malaysia or Siberia; providing disaster relief in China, L’Aquila, India, Costa Rica or West Bengal, yellow tents have been planted without rest on every part of the globe where help was needed. With currently over 100,000 members worldwide, Scientology volunteer ministers constitute the largest independent relief force on earth. Over 1.6 million people have been helped, just last year, thanks to the benevolent involvement of volunteer ministers’ cavalcades.
A Scientology Volunteer Minister does not shut his eyes to the pain, evil and injustice of existence. A Scientology Volunteer Minister is a person who helps his fellow man on a volunteer basis by helping restore purpose, truth and spiritual values to the lives of others. Volunteer Ministers live by the motto that “Something can be done about it!”

Answering the call, New York City, Sept. 2001:

Within minutes of the World Trade Center disaster, Volunteer Ministers were on site, providing support around the clock to emergency personnel. They continued to arrive from all over the United States and from distant countries, until, all told, there were 800 “yellow shirts” working 24/7 alongside New York emergency rescue teams, providing real help. And when it was over, those 800 Volunteer Ministers earned praise from officials and civic leaders and were awarded the 911 Program’s Medal of Valor

Tsunami ruins in Banda Aceh, Indonesia, December 2004

In December 2004, tsunamis devastated the coasts of Southeast Asia and India. Whole towns were destroyed. Islands disappeared. The damage was massive. Six hundred Volunteer Ministers responded from 28 nations around the world, bringing immediate help to the tsunami victims and rescue workers. Given the sheer number affected, training everyone possible on Volunteer Minister technology was vital. And so it was that doctors, nurses, Muslim clerics and Buddhist monks were among the some 50,000 who were trained by the Volunteer Ministers and they in turn brought help to more than 250,000 survivors.

King’s Cross, site of one of four London Transport System Bombings, July 2005

When three bombs exploded in the London Underground and a fourth blew the top off a double-decker bus during the morning rush hour, 250 Volunteer Ministers rushed to the scene. Organized into six Disaster Response Teams, they got to work immediately: assisting the traumatized, directing survivors to safety, providing succor to the injured and to the exhausted rescue workers. They worked with officials behind the scenes to bring the crisis rapidly under control.

Mississippi, August 2005

Winds up to 140 miles an hour devastated areas of Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana, all but destroying New Orleans and wiping out whole towns along the coast. The Scientology Volunteer Ministers were the first volunteers to arrive and there were soon almost 1,000 on the job — assisting the injured, the distraught, and the exhausted rescue workers. With the immediate danger over, they worked in the area for weeks delivering seminars and workshops in shelters, helping people restore their homes, doing whatever was needed, wherever it was needed, to bring stability to the communities that had been destroyed.

Yogyakarta, Java, Indonesia, May – Aug. 2006

A series of disasters occurred on the island of Java between May and July 2006. The devastation began with an earthquake, registering 6.2 on the Richter Scale, just off the coast near Yogyakarta. Volunteer Ministers arrived from Australia and started working with local authorities, hospital staffs, the police and military to bring order and get help to those in need. As they moved through temporary hospital installations, the Volunteer Ministers taught doctors, nurses and relatives of the injured how to do assists, so that there were soon hundreds more able to help. Then came seminars and hands-on demonstrations to those who wanted to help, beginning with Prince Gusti Yudo and his immediate royal family, and moving into schools, universities, the health department and local groups.

Sichuan Province, China, 7.9 earthquake disaster, May 2008.

In May 2008, China suffered its worst earthquake in three decades with a 7.9 quake which literally toppled buildings leaving thousands trapped under houses, schools, factories and office buildings or dead. The earthquake was centered in Sichuan Province in southwest China but was felt across the vast country. There were at least 60,000 known casualties. Volunteer Ministers from all over the world got to the scene, to bring help to those in the worst-affected areas.
How am I using the knowledge of Scientology as a volunteer minister? – by Patrick Valtin
I have been a Scientology volunteer minister for at least 15 years. I use the knowledge acquired through the volunteer minister course on a daily basis, to help people around me. Here are just some examples of application:
- One day I was in a plane, flying to Europe from Florida. A mother was having trouble with her baby who was crying, who obviously did not like flying and seemed to be very scared. The poor mother would not succeed in calming her baby. After 10 minutes I decided I had to do something about it. I went to the mother, asked her to give me her baby. I started to do a special process called “locational process assist” – it consists of helping a person locate himself or herself in his/her present time environment. I did this process about 12 minutes with the baby; he suddenly stopped crying, looked at me and started to smile. I gave the baby back to his mom who did not understand what happened but was very happy about this short action.
- I used this technology to help a friend handle a very difficult situation in her business. Her partner had stolen money and had left the company in a very bad condition. My friend was considering bankrupting the company. But through the application of the Scientology Ethics technology we were able to detect some legal crime her partner had committed, and what my friend had done to “attract” such trouble. In a matter of weeks we were able to find her partner, get him to pay back the money… and make up for the damages he had caused in the business.

- Steve, our son, was part of a Scientology volunteer minister mission in the province of Sichuan, China in 2007, helping earthquake victims recover from their physical and emotional trauma. If you remember, over 60,000 men, women and children had died after a devastating 7.9 earthquake had hit the Sichuan province. Steve spent over 3 weeks in the area, in coordination with the international Red Cross. One day he was giving a nerve assist to an old woman who had turned blind from injuries at the head. Steve, who was not even 20 at the time, applied this technology of assists on the old lady for about one hour. Suddenly she shouted and seemed shocked: she was able to see! This kind of “miracle” was experienced by Steve at least 3 other times, while doing assists on local people.
